The term "schizophrenia" and related terminology is widely misunderstood and misused in entertainment, news, and social media. The most common misunderstanding is that the condition involves a "split personality". In fact, it is a mental illness characterised by hallucinations, confused thinking, and a disruption in the perception of reality.
Entertainment media especially depicts people affected by schizophrenia as dangerous, criminal, homicidal. News media, too, frame reports in sometimes blatant, sometimes subtle ways that lead to reinforcement of stereotyping and stigma. This has serious consequences, as fear of stigma prevents people from seeking help. The longer treatment is delayed, the smaller chances of good outcomes.
